If a cinema experience shod be made closer and maybe even beyond what the real world look and sounds like, then i do not see the point of simplify and tone down this to be comfortable levels all the time. I have always wanted an as real as possible (high fidelity) or maybe even a cleaner and better than the real world look and sound when enjoying movies in the home cinema. ( hmm by the way, why is the Brightness adjustment controlling the near black level and Contrast used for how bright the white is presented in displays and projector?. Shod cinema and source material only be made, and be able and present comfortable light levels for our eyes all the time, or shod also the dynamics range and brightness high up in the annoyance level that we actually every day can get in the real world also be a part of this? One thing i do not quite know how to actually read out of this is. Interesting video about brightness in Cinema jfinnie. (Edit: I see a lot of this is also raised in the Joe Kane video) The only large screen HDR experience out there is Dolby Vision Cinema, which has specially mastered versions of the movies tone mapped much lower and presumably more sympathetically that what we have to deal with in home cinema. At the recent SMPTE 2019 there was a presentation discussing how as the screen viewing angle becomes wider the tolerance to large swings in light level is reduced. Where people are trying to recreate a large screen HDR setup, really I think you can consider the rulebooks not yet written as these types of experience aren't really common in the wild in "real cinemas". IF (big if) you could implement such light in a way which it didn't reflect back at the screen from the room then it might add something to HDR presentation. Just the other day my lad complained to me about being uncomfortable in my cinema room during the intro scenes of Aladdin (live action version) in HDR, tone mapped by my Lumagen Pro to only around 75 real nits. ![]() In grading setups the reference grading screen is with a 5 nit D65 backlight IIRC, and as people try to push out HDR images from projection systems eye comfort due to constant (sometimes dramatic) swings in light levels comes into play. I think there are reasons why this kind of thing could become useful, but not as shown here (very coloured light). Not sure i understand the connection between curved direct view "flat screens" and bias light?Įspecially when the bias light can be switched on or off, and used in different and creative ways. Have newer tried a bias light in projector setups my self, but in theory if the light is neutral D65 white when reflected, is at a low level, is not reflecting any light onto the projected picture itself so the black level in the picture is as good as it get from the projector, and the iris in the viewers eyes is closing more down or is at a more steady level, i think it may have some positive effect too. I do still use a curved samsung" TV and have a curved 127" 2.35:1 projector screen setup with A-lens etc so not sure i got the awfulness about curved setups. It does not store any personal data.Cinemas have for different reasons used curved screen for many years (high screen gain, Anamorpic lenses etc.), some of the reasons why it was not a good idea for "flat screens" was mainly the relative long viewing distance where these screens is commonly used, and the way a curved blank surface reflect the light and the sound etc. The cookie is set by the GDPR Cookie Consent plugin and is used to store whether or not user has consented to the use of cookies.
